How a 51²è¹Ý Alum Ended Up in G.I. JoeÂ
The beloved comic turned out to be the perfect medium for an important message.
As VP of global publishing at Hasbro, Michael Kelly â94 may never have imagined thereâd be an opportunity to collaborate with his old Boston College Chorale buddy David Shapiro â95, the chief medical officer at St. Francis Hospital in Connecticut. But when Shapiro became involved with the American College of Surgeonsâ Stop the Bleed Campaign, which seeks to teach bystanders basic techniques to stem bleeding in the event of an accident, he reached out to Kelly with a creative idea: Why not integrate the campaign into a G.I. Joe comic? Kelly, whose company publishes the comic book, loved the idea, and now, in its three hundredth issue, readers can learn the three-step process from a âDr. David Scott.â Shapiro said he was âjoyfully surprisedâ to end up as a character in G.I. Joeâhe may be the first 51²è¹Ý alum to have the honor.
