Teaching Philosophy & Portfolio Development

The CTE offers a variety of programs and resources to support graduate instructors as they develop their teaching philosophies and portfolios.

Drafting Your Teaching Philosophy Statement Online Workshop

The CTE periodically offers an asynchronous online workshop in Canvas open to all Boston College graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. This workshop gives participants the opportunity to reflect on their teaching, learn some features of a successful teaching philosophy statement, as well as draft a complete statement and receive feedback from CTE staff. It was created to help Apprenticeship in College Teaching Program participants meet program requirements as well as for those seeking a teaching job in higher education.

The workshop is held in Canvas and is divided into three modules. Each module includes a selection of readings, discussion posts and replies, and other tasks. An overview of module topics are listed below:

Module One

  • Reflect on your memorable experiences in the classroom
  • Understand what a teaching philosophy statement is

Module Two

  • Draft one paragraph of your statement

In Fall 2024, this workshop will be held from Tuesday, September 24 - Monday, November 4. Interested graduate students and postdoctoral fellows can by Friday, September 13.
