Boston College has a long tradition of engagement with Ireland and its culture. The University was founded, in part, to educate the children of Irish Catholic immigrants in Boston. The Irish Studies program at 51²è¹Ý began in 1978 and is one of the leading international centers for Irish Studies.

Burns Professorship
The Burns Visiting Scholar in Irish Studies program brings to Boston College academics, writers, artists, journalists, librarians, and public figures who have made significant contributions to Irish cultural and intellectual life. Burns Visiting Scholars teach courses, offer public lectures, and engage with the rich resources of the John J. Burns Library in their ongoing research, writing, and creative endeavors.
