Program Details
The Certificate in Jesuit Studies program presents a variety of opportunities for participants to develop a deep, informed understanding of the spirituality, history, pedagogy, leadership methods, and other aspects associated with the Society of Jesus and its apostolates.
Requirements
To apply to be considered for the Certificate in Jesuit Studies or to take a single course, contact the associate director of the Institute, Matt Schweitzer (schweima@bc.edu). Â
All Certificate students are required to take the immersion course:
JESU/EDUC 7157 In the Footsteps of Leaders (Immersion)Â
Take at least 4 courses out of the following:
JESU/EDUC 7131 Social Justice in Jesuit Contexts Â
JESU/EDUC/TMHC 7132 Discernment and Prayer in the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola
JESU/EDUC XXXX Emerging Leaders (Seminar)
JESU/EDUC 7152 Constitutions of the Society of Jesus
JESU/EDUC 7158 Jesuit Pedagogy Â
JESU/EDUC 7159 History of the Jesuits

Submit the Program of Study form to your certificate advisor for review. Certificates will be awarded upon completion of the required coursework and submission of the Program of Study to the Institute for Advanced Jesuit Studies.

Timeline & Details
Certificate courses are not all offerred at the same time. Please see the enrollment page to see what courses are being offered in the upcoming semesters.
Courses are open to all graduate and professional students at Boston College, however, those pursuing the Certificate will receive preferential enrollment in the courses.
Enrollment in a course does not oblige the participant from completing the additional courses required for a Certificate in Jesuit Studies. However, if a student has already taken courses within the Certificate program but has not applied to the program, that student may apply for the Certificate program and those credits will count towards the required course credits. In addition, those who have taken Certificate courses may also apply their credits and coursework towards a Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Jesuit Education in a Global World.ÌýÌý

Tuition
Tuition rates for the 2023–2024 academic year for Certificate courses are $1,262 per graduate-level credit. Tuition costs associated with courses are set each year by the 51²è¹Ý and are subject to yearly increases. Financial assistance may be available and is determined by the Institute on a case-by-case basis.
If you are currently enrolled in a graduate or professional program at Boston College and are using electives to take Certificate courses, your tuition rates may be set at the tuition rates of your graduate school within Boston College.
