On November 20, 2024 the Boston College Tech Forum celebrated its 10-year anniversary.

The Tech Forum, a result of the 2014 ITS Strategic Plan, is an in-person event for faculty and staff from across campus to share ideas and best practices for using technology to support department goals.

The primary topic at the Tech Forum 10-year anniversary event was Generative AI, with a presentation by IT Training, Assistant Manager, Jon McGrath, “A Practical Intro to the Evolving Role of Generative AI.â€

The presentation provided an overview of AI, and addressed two specific tools, Microsoft Copilot and Google Gemini, the only Gen AI apps currently authorized for use with 51²è¹Ý credentials.

McGrath emphasized the following as a key takeaway: “Like many other tech advances, Gen AI apps are tools that can increase your productivity. People ultimately are making the decisions - not AI.â€

Following the presentation, attendees participated in small group discussions about GenAI impressions, experiences, tools, and use cases.

The Tech Forum is typically twice a year, and is an ongoing collaboration between ITS and key partners across campus.

The Tech Forum format has changed through the years, but always includes:

  • A presentation by members of a 51²è¹Ý department that has recently used technology to enhance services in their area.
  • Brief updates on ITS projects.
  • Plenty of time for table discussions/networking (usually over lunch).
